Uzbekistan Closes Borders with Afghanistan amid Coronavirus Fears

KABUL (MEP) –Northern Balkh local officials say Uzbekistan has closed its borders with Afghanistan to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“The joint border between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan will be closed for traffic from today Monday, March 02, until further notice,” Munir Ahmed Farhad, Balkh governor spokesman told MEP.

The Uzbek government has declared the coronavirus outbreak as the main cause of the move.

The borders are temporarily closed, and the exact opening date is not known yet, said Farhad.

Although some media have reported a suspected coronavirus case in Balkh, but the spokesman for the governor says no positive or suspected cases have been recorded in the province so far.

Uzbekistan closes its border with Afghanistan a day after Pakistan closed Spin Boldak border crossing to prevent the spread of coronavirus from Afghanistan.
