US Defense Secretary Arrives In Kabul

ashton-carter-2MEP: US Defense Secretary, Ashton Carter has arrived in capital Kabul on Tuesday morning on an unannounced visit.

Carter is expected to meet and hold talks with the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, CEO Abdullah Abdullah adn other senior leaders of the National Unity Government (NUG).

Carter’s visit comes as recently heads of NATO member states have extended their aid commitments to Afghanistan for three more years and is set to remain by the security forces until 2020.

In the meantime, the US has pledged to help the Afghan security forces with $1 billion annually and the number of troops in Afghanistan will be increased to up to 8400.

US defense secretary before coming to Kabul, has landed in Iraq on Monday in an unannounced visit and promised to the country’s officials to deploy 560 troops to help fight the Takfir Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terror group, raising the total to more than 4,600.
