UN Secretary General Urges For A Positive Solution in Yemen

KABUL: (Middle East Press) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis on Saturday.

The UN-facilitated negotiations by UN Special Representative to Yemen Jamal Benomar remain the only chance to prevent a long drawn out conflict, said Mr. Ban in remarks to the League of Arab States Summit, taking place in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt.

“It is my fanatical hope that at this League of Arab States summit,

Arab leaders will lay-down clear guidelines to peacefully resolve the crisis in Yemen,” he added.

The UN Chief called upon the Arab leaders to work with each other and the United Nations to “strengthen our bonds for the people of this region and the security of our world.”

He also called for intensifying efforts to counter violence and terrorism. “We must address the root causes that fuel extremism and violence. Even when security measures are needed, reliance on military approaches alone will not solve these problems,” Mr. Ban said, stressing that security responses must respect human rights.
