UN: Over 6 Million Syrians Receive Humanitarian Aid In 2016

syria_humanitarian_aid_rtr_imgKABUL: (MEP) More than six million Syrians have been provided with humanitarian aid since the beginning of 2016, the United Nations said in a statement.

The past few weeks has seen some signs of hope for de-escalation of the bloody five-year-long conflict, according to the UN. “Fewer bombs are falling; humanitarian access has opened up in some places; negotiators from all sides are preparing to come together and talk,” the statement said, adding, however, that there are still serious concerns about the situation in some areas – such as in northern rural Homs and in Aleppo, where “around 500,000 people are caught behind active frontlines.”

The statement adds that two million people remain in areas controlled by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terror group.
