Tripartite Talks Underway Over Chabahar-Herat Railway Line

Indian-RailwaysKABUL: (MEP) The officials of Afghanistan, Iran and India have reportedly started talks over the issues of the establishment of a railway line from the strategic Chabahar port to the western Herat province.

The Ministry of Public Works of Afghanistan (MoPW) announced Sunday that the government of India is considering the support for the construction of the railway.

“India has shown a willingness to establish a railway route linking Chabahar and Herat and this is a milestone toward connecting Afghanistan to Chabahar port,” said Mahdi Rohani a spokesman for the ministry of public works.

The railway will help Afghanistan connect with the Chabahar port, a move that has been welcomed by the officials in Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), according to the source.

Chabahar is one of the southeastern city of Sistan and Baluchestan provinces of Iran and is the only ocean port of the country, which is located in the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Its marina has the ability of mooring ocean-going vessels as well as being a ‘free trade zone’ in Iran.

Chabahar port due to strategic location close to the land and sea, has great importance across borders with the Indian Ocean in the field of trade, economy, tourism, transit of goods and passengers for world’s investors, especially Afghanistan and Pakistan.
