Suspected knifeman arrested outside UK parliament

British armed police have detained a man on suspicion of having a knife after he ran, shouting, towards one of the gates of the Westminster parliament in central London on Friday afternoon.

A member of public reportedly shouted “knife, knife, knife,” according to one Sun reporter.

Officers held the man on the ground at gunpoint at the entrance to New Palace Yard, the scene of a terrorist attack in March in which a police officer, PC Keith Palmer, was killed.

A bearded man, wearing black trousers and a grey sweatshirt, could be seen being held against the fence with his arms behind his back by a police officer.

A parliamentary spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident outside the Palace of Westminster, which is being dealt with by the Metropolitan Police.”

In March, Khalid Masood drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and then attacked a policeman on parliament grounds, killing five people before he was shot dead.

The U.K. has been on high alert following the Westminster attack, the bombing in Manchester last month which killed 22 people, and the London Bridge and Borough Market attack, which killed eight.
