conjoined-twinsKABUL: (Middle East Press) Afghan surgeons have carried out a successful operation at the French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC) and separated conjoined twins in capital Kabul for the first time in the country.

Jalil Wardak, the head of surgery at the FMIC said the babies were transferred from north-eastern of Badakhshan province to the hospital recently in preparation for the surgery adding that they had been joined at the abdomen.

“It was a big challenge – making their joint intestines and kidneys separate was difficult but doctors made it successfully,” Wardak said.

The twins are from a poor and vulnerable family and were able to travel to Kabul and undergo the surgery through the help of a charity organization.

Meanwhile, the father of the baby girls, Haidar Ahmad, said he didn’t believe that his babies could be separated from each other and survive.
