The bomb before 7 p.m. local time was followed after two blasts that have hit near a Shia mosque in the country’s eastern city of Qatif destroying a car parked near the mosque.

Photos of Medina posted on social media showed smoke billowing from a fire outside the mosque where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is buried.

The Monday attack was an apparently coordinated campaign as Saudis prepared to break their fast on the penultimate day of the holy month of Ramadan.

Meanwhile, Al-Arabiya gave a different account of the incident, saying the bomber had targeted the security officers by pretending he wanted to break his Ramadan fast with them.

Nasima al-Sada, a resident of Qatif, told AFP that “one bomber blew himself up near the mosque,” which is usually used by Shias in downtown Qatif. She added that no bystanders were hurt in the blast.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. However, suspicions are on Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terror group.
