The deadly bombing occurred when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park of Allama Iqbal Town.
“Many [of the injured] are in operation theaters now being treated and we fear that the death toll may climb considerably”, Salman Rafiq, a health adviser to the chief minister of Punjab province said.
The park was crowded with families, some celebrating Easter. Most of the victims are said to be women and children.
The explosion appears to have been at the main gate of the park in an area where cars are usually left – and a short distance from the children’s swings.
Eye witnesses said there were pools of blood and scattered body parts spread across the site of the attack.
“We took the injured to hospitals on rickshaws and taxis,” one eye witness said.
Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the blast. Sharif was born in Lahore and enjoys strong support there.
The Prime minister expressed his grief and sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.
He also directed the authorities concerned to ensure special medical care to the injured, said PM Office Media Wing.
