Shootings Kill 16 at Mexico Cockfight Match

cockfight-08174405KABUL: (Middle East Press) At least sixteen people were killed and several others injured in separate shooting attacks in Mexico’s troubled southern state of Guerrero, police said.

The shootings erupted at a cockfight and a football field over the weekend after unknown gunmen in the Pacific coast town of Cuajinicuilapa opened fire on the crowd there.

At least 12 people were reportedly killed and five others injured in the shooting.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the cause of the gun battle was under investigation.

Two of the dead were minors under the age of 18, including a 12-year-old boy whose father is a local gang leader, according to the statement.

A senior state police official told AFP that “some of the dead were taken away by their relatives minutes before security forces arrived” while the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital.

Cuajinicuilapa, which lies near the state of Oaxaca, is famous for its mixture of cultures derived from descendants of African slaves.

Elsewhere in the same state, unidentified gunmen opened fire on an amateur soccer match on the outskirts of the Acapulco city, killing four people.
