Rebels attack kill 10 at Afghan construction camp

KABUL: (MEP) – A senior official says rebels have attacked a construction camp in western Afghanistan, killing nine workers and a policeman.

Deputy Public Works Minister Ahmad Shah Wahid says the pre-dawn Saturday attack targeted a road-building project in Herat province’s Karukh district.

Like most development projects in Afghanistan it had foreign funding—in this case German, according to Wahid. Such projects are frequently targeted by rebels.

Violence has increased in recent months as rebels fight to regain territory and foreign forces withdraw in all Afghanistan.
