Quebec Mosque Shooting Leaves Five Dead

MEP: At least five people were killed and several others wounded in a shooting at a mosque in the Canadian city of Quebec, police said.

The attack happened when assailants opened fire at people inside the mosque, known as the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec, during evening prayers at 8:00 pm local time on Sunday (0100 GMT Monday).

Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre President Mohamed Yangui confirmed the number of dead to reporters. Authorities did not confirm the number of fatalities. The number of wounded victims was not immediately clear.

Two arrests have been made, a police spokesman said. Local newspaper Le Soleil said police accepted a third suspect could still be on the run.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families.”

Trudeau also said he was being briefed about the incident and had offered “any & all assistance needed.”
