Promotion Of Wahhabism At Religious Schools Of Pakistan

MEP: The Business Standard reports: “Chris Murphy” a member of the United States Senate, made an speech at the council on foreign relations and said there are twenty-four thousand religious schools in Pakistan that are financially and ideologically supported by Saudi Arabia.

He said that the United States should stop Saudi Arabia from supporting the radical Islamists. Because the state funds of Riyadh creates terrorism and hatred in the region.

He noted that in 1956, there were only 224 schools in Pakistan, but today there are more than 24 thousand religious schools. They don’t only promote extremism and violence, but they’ve become a part of the organizational programs and the human resources of the groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS). Thousands of religious schools in Pakistan that are spiritually and financially supported by Saudi Arabia; cause the religious intolerance in Pakistan. They promote anti-Shiite and anti-Western sentiments in the country.

He also noted that since 1960, Saudi Arabia has spent 100 billion dollars in mosques, religious centers and schools all over the world, especially in Pakistan, to spread Wahhabi Islam. (It’s interesting to know that the former Soviet Union had spent 7 billion dollars for promoting their ideology between 1920 and 1991. In comparison with Saudi Arabia, this amount of money seems negligible!)

At the end of the speech he said that due to the positive aspects of America’s alliance with Saudi Arabia, we can no longer afford to continue cooperation in the fight against Islamic extremism. Washington should suspend the support of Saudi Arabia’s military operations in Yemen. At least until we ensure that the campaigns against the Islamic State and al-Qaeda aren’t deviated and Riyadh doesn’t continue to promote the ideology of Wahhabism in the region and also in the different countries all over the world.
