Prohibition Of Using The Name Of “Fidel Castro” In Cuba

MEP: Cuban parliament banned using the name of “Fidel Castro” for naming the streets or buildings in Cuba.

They have also prohibited constructing memorial statues for him. This law has been enacted according to the last will of the father of the Cuban Revolution.

The parliament approved this proposal with a unanimous vote, so putting the name of “Fidel Castro” on the institutions, squares, parks, streets and other public places or attempting to hold a ceremony for honoring his memory has been prohibited.

The text which was published by the Cuban media points out to the ban of using images of the leader of the Cuban Revolution who died Nov. 25 at age 90.

Holding a memorial for him, printing his picture on the currency of the country, making any statue of him or using his name for any advertising or commercial purposes is also prohibited.

Raul Castro who is the President of the Council of State of Cuba since 2006 said: “He was still insisting on this matter until the last hours of his life.”

According to the Cuban media there are exceptions for the law, including institutions that teach the ideology of the leader of the Cuban revolution. It needs to be noted that they haven’t announced any punishment for breaking this law yet.
