President Karzai sacks Attorney General Alako

KABUL: (MEP) – President Hamid Karzai reportedly fired Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Alako when the two met on Sunday night after the President discovered that Mr. Alako had recently met with Taliban representatives in an unsanctioned rendezvous in Dubai, TOLO news reprted.

However, according to Presidential Palace officials, due to a busy Independence Day schedule, President Karzai has not yet had a chance to finalize paperwork for the termination. At the moment, Mr. Alako officially remains the Attorney General of Afghanistan, an office he has held since 2008.

In response to news of Mr. Aloko’s termination, Mohammad Ismail Qasimyar, a member of the High Peace Council (HPC) and Foreign Relations Advisor, criticized the interference of officials not designated as negotiators in the peace process, indicating his support for President Karzai’s decision. Mr. Qasimyar told TOLO news that individuals and institutions that don’t have the formal responsibility of managing peace negotiations should not intervene in the process.
