Police In Brussels Clash With Protesters Over Shrine Attacks

BRUSSELS-DEMO-spra_3098531kKABUL: (MEP) Belgian riot police clashed Sunday with hundreds of right-wing hooligans at a temporary shrine firing water cannon to disperse the hooligans who disrupted mourners at the shrine for victims of the Brussels attacks.

The clashes broke out in front of the Bourse, which has become a symbolic rallying point for people to pay their respects to those who died in Tuesday’s attacks.

Riot police intervened to try to restore order after the group confronted Muslim women in the crowds, made Nazi salutes and chanted.

A “march against fear” planned for Sunday was called off after the authorities said it would strain police resources for the investigation.

Under-fire Belgian authorities meanwhile detained four terror suspects after carrying out 13 raids as they seek to round up a web of jihadists with links to the carnage in the Belgian capital and to attacks and plots in France.

Ten were arrested and two police officers injured.

“We had 340 hooligans from different football clubs who came to Brussels and we knew for sure that they would create some trouble,” Police Commissioner Christian De Coninck said.

Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur expressed his disgust, with Belgium still in mourning over the suicide bombings at Brussels airport and subway, which killed at least 31 people and injured some 270.

“The police were not deployed to protect people from these hooligans but a whole other threat,” said Mayeur told RTL television.
