MEP: An airplane with 81 people on board, including football players from Brazil, has crashed in Colombia.

The plane was heading for a regional tournament final that crashed on its way to Medellin’s international airport, the country’s civil aviation association said on its website on Tuesday.

The plane crashed due to lack of fuel at around 10:15pm local time in Cerro Gordo in the municipality of La Union, according to Mi Oriente.

“It’s a tragedy of huge proportions,” Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez told Blu Radio on his way to the site in a mountainous area outside the city. He said ambulances and rescuers were on their way.

The aircraft was carrying Brazil’s Chapecoense Real football team, 72 passengers and nine crew.
