Plane Breaks Apart after Skidding Off Runway in Turkey
KABUL (MEP) — Three people have died after a passenger plane skidded off the runway and broke apart while landing at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport on Wednesday.
The plane caught fire and split into three pieces after skidding from the runway.
Three people died among the 177 passengers and six crew members.
The Boeing 737 operated by Pegasus Airlines had flown into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport from the Aegean port city of Izmir, said Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya.
After skidding off the runway, the plane drifted around 50 meters, Yerlikaya said.
“Then it fell from a height of around 30 meters on the highway”
The plane was apparently buffeted by strong winds and heavy rain lashing Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, he added.
