Over 300 Killed and Injured in Afghanistan’s Immense Earthquake

1394080414084993563873710KABUL: (Middle East Press) A powerful earthquake at 7.5 magnitude shook many provinces of Afghanistan including capital Kabul, Takhar, Nangarhar, Badakhshan, Kunar and Parwan on Monday afternoon.

Reports indicate, some 90 people have lost their lives, over 240 others were injured and around 400 to 500 homes were damaged during the powerful tremor.

However the casualty toll is expected to rise as officials gather information from affected areas in remote districts.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) magnitude 7.5 earthquake near the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan (SW of Jarm) occurred as the result of reverse faulting at intermediate depths, approximately 210 km below the Hindu Kush Range in northeastern Afghanistan.

At least 12 school girls were killed as they were trying to run from their school building which reportedly collapsed during the quake in Takhar province.

Ministry of Interior spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on Monday afternoon that the security forces have been ordered to help people affected by the earthquake.
