Nuristani Calls on Taliban Not to Target Polling Stations

The head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has called on the armed Taliban not to target polling stations on the presidential election day.

In a video message released today Monday, July 29, Hawa Alam Nuristani has said that the election in the country is an Afghan process and the Taliban are also Afghans, Middle East Press reports.

She has stated that the Taliban should give Afghans the opportunity to take active part in the elections and cast the ballots as their own favors.

The election is the right of Afghans and it is hoped that they (the Taliban) will not disrupt this right and let men and women take part in the elections, said Nuristani.

The armed Taliban have not responded to this regard yet.

Presidential election is scheduled to be hold on Saturday, 28 September, and still there are concerns about the security of elections day.

However, on the first day of campaigning, a number of attackers blew up and then stormed the office of Amrullah Saleh, the running mate of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, killing 20 and wounding 50 others.
