Following the attack, Hezbollah officials announced they would act accordingly against the perpetrators of the assassination.
A statement by the group gave weight to the suggestion, by announcing that the internal investigation would seek to determine whether a “missile or artillery strike” had been responsible.
Hezbollah reported from its Lebanese headquarters that 55-year-old Badreddine was killed near Damascus airport.
The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, with flowers being strewn over the coffin. Some mourners blamed Israel for the killing, with one mourner commenting, “Hezbollah has many spies.” Another held that without Badreddine’s leadership “Daesh (Isis) would be here now”.
Badreddine, was the most senior Hezbollah member to have been killed since his predecessor and brother-in-law Imad Mughniyeh was assassinated in Damascus in February 2008 in a joint Mossad and CIA operation.
