According to reports, the incident occurred when a knife-wielding man broke into the building in the city of Sagamihara, late on Monday and started to stab people.

The suspect has been identified as Satoshi Uematsu, 26, Japan’s NTV said.

The suspect was quoted by police as saying: “I want to get rid of the disabled from this world,” Japanese media reported.

Twenty of the injured are in critical condition, the national fire department, which also performs emergency medical care, has said.

The suspect was reportedly a former employee at the facility.

NHK reported that the facility, which has a maximum capacity of 160, including staff, is usually locked at night but the man broke into the building by smashing a window.

Mass killings are rare in Japan, which has extremely strict gun control laws.
