Is Jordan Willing to Join the Axis of Resistance?

Iran and Jordan political relations have cooled after Iran’s revolution and it has stayed in this way for the last three decades. The war between Iran and Iraq and also some regional treaties darkened the relations even more to the extent that officials of both countries didn’t take part in the ceremonies held by the other country, one of them International Quds Day.

However recent developments in the region indicate that a lot has changed between Tehran-Amman and the relations have turned over a new leaf. Return of the Jordanian ambassador to Tehran is an example to show the desire of both countries to break the ice in their relations.

Some political observers assume that Iran is attempting to help the Palestinians in the West Bank through Jordan, since this country has a direct geographical border with Palestine, and Tehran believes that Jordan is looking for a way to solve the issue of Palestinian refugees and returning them to their homeland to decrease the density of its population and escape from the nightmare of turning into a substitute homeland for Palestinians for good.

According to what was mentioned, some political parties in Iran and Jordan believe that Iran is the only country which is able to help the Palestinians and reassure Jordan and ease its worries about the idea of becoming the substitute homeland.

Iran is fully aware of Jordan, its role and position in the region and that it’s tightly pressed by the US to safeguard the security of Israel by acting as a shield for it. Besides, the current events in the region and flood of Iraqi and Syrian refugees to Jordan, has intensified the crisis and has brought troubles and worries for Amman.

Experts believe that Tehran sees this as a reason for Jordan’s tendency to overview its political approach in order to protect its territorial integrity. Because getting closer to a powerful country like Iran can guarantee the fulfillment of Jordan’s demands.

However some issues rise here; will the US, Saudi Arabia and their allies keep quiet and allow this? And to what extent will Iran and Jordan relations progress?

Some analysts presume that recent political developments in the region taught a lesson to Jordan. Amman realized that they can’t trust the US, because Americans stopped their support from their allies during the revolutions in the region, known as Arab Spring. Furthermore, American’s stance regarding some famous events in the region, such as what went on in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Libya, demonstrated that they have neither plans nor intention to solve the issue, same as what happened in the Middle East peace talks.

All in all, Tehran is hopeful to see a change in Jordan’s regional strategies and waiting for Jordan to give up helping the US and join the Axis of Resistance.
