Int’l Community Has Lost Confidence in Afghan Government’s Fight against Corruption

The US ambassador in Kabul says that countries in the international community no longer have confidence in the Afghan government’s will to fight against corruption and have lost their former confidence.

National anti-corruption program was held today Sunday, December 15, at the presidential palace (ARG) and addressed the serious fight against this phenomenon.

President Ashraf Ghani, insisting that the fight against corruption had accomplishments and weaknesses, stated that joint cooperation between government departments is needed to fight corruption.

He noted that good gains have been made in the judicial aspects, but there are still major challenges to the more serious fight.

President Ghani believes that 82 out of 102 government’s commitments to the international community are being implemented in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Ghani stated that 200 people had been convicted after investigating their cases by the Anti-Corruption Judicial Center, and 70 high-level officials and government appointees include the suspects.

But the US ambassador to Afghanistan, John R. Bass, who attended the meeting, stated that “the international community has lost confidence in the Afghan government’s fight against corruption.”

He went to confess that widespread corruption in Afghanistan has been a major impediment to the international community’s aid and that these countries believe their aid is in the hands of a few individuals.

The US ambassador did not name these people.

However, none of the Afghan governments have succeeded in combating corruption and have only adopted the slogan.
