Indonesian Plane Crash Kills 38 People

medan-1.siKABUL: (Middle East Press) At least 38 people were killed when a military air force plane crashed in the city of Medan on Indonesia’s western island of Sumatra on Tuesday.

The Hercules C-130 plane with 12 crew members on board crashed into houses and cars and burst into flames a few minutes after take-off at 12:08 p.m. local time (0508 GMT), local TV reported.

Sairi M. Saragih, a spokeswoman for Adam Malik hospital in Medan, said it has received 38 bodies so far, according to the news agency. Hisar Turnip, of the national search and rescue agency, told Reuters.

The plane was transporting military supplies to airbases, Agence France-Presse reported. Air force Chief Air Marshall Agus Supriatna told the AP.

“I saw the plane from the direction of the airport and it was tilting already, then I saw smoke billowing,” a local resident told AFP.

A massive search and rescue operation swung into action minutes after the incident.
