KABUL: (Middle East Press) An Indian aid worker who was identified as Alexis Prem Kumar 47 years old and who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen eight months before in western Herat Province has been freed unanimously.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on his tweeter page that he is “delighted at securing the release of Indian Jesuit Priest Father Alexis Prem Kumar from imprisonment in Afghanistan,”‎ adding that his family has been informed of his release and safe return.

It is still unknown as who the kidnappers were and how the release was secured or whether there is a ransom involved.

Alex Prem Kumar had been working with Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) for four years in Afghanistan before he was kidnapped last year.

Kumar arrived in New Delhi, thanking the prime minister for his safe and secure return.
