Hillary Clinton Selects Tim Kaine, As Running Mate

clintonkaine1MEP: Hillary Clinton has selected Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her vice presidential running mate in the 2016 race for the White House on Friday.

Senator Kaine is seen as a safe if unadventurous choice for Mrs Clinton as she pitches herself as the trusted option against the controversial Republican.

Mrs. Clinton’s choice, which she announced via text message to supporters, came after her advisers spent months poring over potential vice-presidential candidates who could lift the Democratic ticket in an unpredictable race against Mr. Donald Trump.

On Twitter a few seconds later, Clinton described Kaine as “a man who’s devoted his life to fighting for others”.

The pair are expected to hit their first join campaign event at a Miami, Florida, rally at noon on Saturday. They will speak at Florida International University, which is known for its heavily Hispanic body of students.

The 58-year-old lawyer and former governor was elected to the Senate in 2012.

Mrs. Clinton had entertained more daring choices. She considered Thomas E. Perez, the secretary of labor, who would have been the first Hispanic on a major party ticket; Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, who would have been the first African-American to seek the vice presidency; and James G. Stavridis, a retired four-star Navy admiral who served as the supreme allied commander at NATO but had never held elected office.

Kaine was born in Minnesota and grew up in Kansas City. He left for Virginia after graduating from Harvard Law.

Clinton called him “a relentless optimist who believes no problem is unsolvable if you put in the work to solve it”.

He served on the Armed Services Committee and was apparently backed by Bill Clinton for the role due to domestic and international policy experience.
