These seasonal rains known as the ‘plum rains’ or Meiyu-baiyu rains cause flooding every year, usually affecting the country for around two months between late May and early summer, but they have come a little early this time round.
Provinces like Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Jiangsu and Yunnan’s northern and western parts are still under alert for heavy downpours, but some of the other areas are expected to clear up soon. The torrential rain has led to extensive water logging, according to CCTV.
The rains have caused direct economic losses of 386 million yuan (USD 58.9 million) so far, the city’s flood control and drought relief headquarters estimated.
