Heavy Rains And Floods Kill 87, Thousands Evacuated In China

china-flood-1MEP: At least 87 people have lost their lives and thousands were forced to leave their homes in heavy torrential downpours have triggered floods and landslides in China, state media reported on Saturday.

Some 78 people are also missing in the northern province of Hebei after rain triggered floods and landslides, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the civil affairs department.

Beijing has been hit by constant rain since Tuesday that has forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains and flooded city streets. The rain has also threatened embankments along rivers in central China, with authorities mobilizing troops and heavy equipment to fill the gaps.

The Chinese authorities have said they will provide funds for flood-hit areas.

The agency reported that nearly 50,000 homes collapsed and more than eight million people were affected.

This summer, large parts of China have been inundated with torrential rain, killing over 200 people.

Altogether about 8.6 million people have been affected by the flooding, according state media and local government reports.
