KABUL: (Middle East Press) German security forces and protesters have clashed in Frankfurt city of Germany during anti-austerity demonstrations following the opening of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) new headquarters.

Police cars were set on fire and stones were thrown out at police after violence broke out close to the city’s Alte Oper concert hall hours before the ECB building’s official opening.

In response, police fired tear gas, used water cannon and even deployed armored personnel carriers in a bid to disperse the crowd.

At least two police officers were injured in the clashes, and some 350 people have reportedly been arrested.

Organizers were bringing a left-wing alliance of protesters from across Germany and the rest of Europe to voice their anger at the ECB’s role in austerity measures in EU member states, most recently Greece.

Activists said police had used pepper spray.
