Five Dead, Eight Wounded At Florida Airport Shooting As Suspect Identified As Iraq Veteran

MEP: The deadly shooting at a Florida airport on Friday killed five people and at least eight others injured as officials say the attacker was identified as an Iraqi veteran.

The shooting happened at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida.

According to a senior law enforcement official, the gunman, identified as Esteban Santiago, 26 was mentally disturbed and heard voices in his head telling him to commit acts of violence.

He walked into the F.B.I. office in Anchorage in November and made disturbing remarks that prompted officials to urge him to seek mental health care.

He carried a US military identification, US Senator Bill Nelson of Florida told MSNBC.

Florida’s Broward County Sheriff’s office confirmed the shooting in an update on Twitter. The sheriff’s office also stated that the suspect has been taken into custody.

He surrendered to police when he ran out of ammunition, according to reports.

President-elect Donald Trump said in a tweet that he was “monitoring the terrible situation in Florida,” noting he had spoken to Gov. Rick Scott, who later said “this is a senseless act of evil.”

Also, President Barack Obama spoke to Scott and Sharief and extended his condolences to the loved ones of the victims, a White House spokesman said.
