The blasts on Wednesday occurred on the outskirts of the northeastern city of Maiduguri – the birthplace of the Boko Haram armed group.

According to eyewitnesses, the first bomber struck inside the mosque, while the second blew herself up outside as survivors tried to flee.

Umar Usman, a worshipper who avoided the blast because he was late arriving to pray, told the Associated Press: “We were just a few meters away from the mosque when a loud bang erupted and all we could see was dark smoke and bodies littered around.”

Those injured in the blast have been transferred to nearby hospital.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, however such incidents mostly claimed by Boko Haram militants.
