US secretary of state headed in Kabul on a surprise trip and met with Afghan NUG leaders emphasizing on an early agreement with Taliban.

Mike Pompeo arrived in Kabul yesterday and discussed with Afghan NUG leaders in Presidential Palace, Middle East Press reports.

National Unity Government leaders and US Secretary of Sates discussed progress in quality and moral of security and defense forces, the coordination and alignment of bilateral relations, Peace Process, and upcoming presidential election.

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, and the United States Secretary of State, noted the increasing level of coordination and alignment between the Afghan government and the United States, saying that the Afghan government and its international partners have shown their willingness and readiness to resolve the forty-year Afghan political crisis And now it is time for the Taliban and their supporters to offer such readiness.

“Efforts, united and related messages will be conclusive for Afghan peace,” Ghani noted.

At the same time, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the executive director of the National Unity Government, said the overwhelming majority of Afghans want a lasting peace in the country; but this peace should not be at the expense of the loss of values ​​and achievements caused by the victims of the Afghan people.

However, Mike Pompeo said that his country is supporting the peace process and the Afghan presidential elections held on 28 September 2019, and are ready to cooperate in this regard.

After meeting with NUG leaders, he said that good progress was being made in talks with the Taliban, and an agreement with the Taliban on the non-use of Afghanistan’s territory for terrorist purposes is expected to be finalized soon.

“I hope we can have a peace deal before Sept. 1, so is our goal,” Pompeo said.

Meanwhile, a new round of Talks are going to take place between Taliban negotiators and US Envoy, Zalmai Khalilzad in Qatar.
