Speaking on state radio, Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o the transportation minister said the figures represented only a provisional toll from the accident, which occurred near the train station in the town of Eseka, around 120 km (75 miles) west of the capital, Yaounde on Friday.

The Associated Press said there were 1,300 people on the train instead of the usual 600.

“The cause of the accident is not yet clear,” said the minister, via state broadcaster CRTV.

Witnesses said that several wagons swung off the track as the crammed train derailed leaving behind debris spread over adjacent rail tracks.
