china_mine_blast_070116KABUL: (MEP) At least 19 workers were killed in a coal mine accident in northern China, the country’s media said Thursday.

The accident took place at around 10:10pm on Wednesday night on an underground platform in a mine in Shuozhou city of Shanxi province, the state-run Xinhua news agency.

There were about 129 workers in the mine when the accident happened, and 110 managed to make it to safety, according to the agency.

The cause of the accident is still unknown. However, it could have been a fire, a gas leak, or a flood.

The accident comes as at least 12 people were killed earlier this month in the northeastern Jilin province, after a gas leak in a coal mine.
