Aggression And Violence Kill More Than 800 Iraqis In May: UN

MEP: The United Nations (UN) released its latest figures indicating that attacks and violence in Iraq left around 867 people in May.

The figures came as Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) militants step up their activities in the face of large-scale army operations across the country.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), at least 1,459 others were also injured.

There were 468 civilians among those killed, while the number of civilian injuries hit 1,041, the UN mission added.

At least 399 members of the Iraqi security forces were among deceased, and 418 others sustained injuries, the source noted.

A large number of the fatalities were recorded in the capital Baghdad, where 267 civilians were killed and 740 others wounded.

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq Jan Kubis expressed sorrow over the continuing loss of life as a result of violence in Iraq.

He urged the Baghdad government to take more effective measures to protect civilians against terrorist attacks.
