Abdullah’s reaction to release of Taliban prisoners

Executive Director of the National Unity Government expressed concern amid release of Taliban prisoners, saying the approach should not be used as campaign.

Abdullah Abdullah today (Monday, June 17) at Council of Ministers meeting stated that the release of the Taliban prisoners had been carried out for goodwill and should not have an electoral purpose or an objective, Middle East Press reports.

He emphasized that peace does not belong to one person, and no one can alone be the champion of peace. There must be a peaceful representation of the people in the peace process.

According to Abdullah, there is a regional consensus in support of the Afghan peace process, and the Afghan government, with this consensus, can put pressure on the Taliban and its supporters to bring peace talks to a positive conclusion.

The Chief Executive has stated that peace talks with the Taliban should be pursued with the participation of the people and their representatives.

Dr. Abdullah reacted to the release of the Taliban prisoners while President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani issued a decree releasing 887 Taliban prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr for showing the goodwill of the government and implementing the approval of the Loya Jirga.

So far, 490 Taliban prisoners have been released from prison, and the president has named these prisoners as peace ambassadors.
