50 Killed In Ethiopia Landslides, Flooding Amid Rains

LandslidesMEP: A state-affiliated broadcaster in Ethiopia says at least 50 people have been killed in flooding and landslide caused by heavy rains.

“Roads have been washed away, bridges have collapsed and tens of thousands of people are affected by heavy rains in many parts of the country” Fana Broadcasting Corporate cited local officials on Tuesday.

Some 41 people died in Wolayita Zone in southern Ethiopia on Monday due to the landslide, local media quoted Alemayehu Mamo, a regional police official, as saying.

Other reports said that nine others were also killed in the Bale region in southeastern Ethiopia following the flooding. Over 1,000 cattle also reportedly drowned in the area.

Ethiopia is struggling with the worst drought in 50 years, but unseasonably heavy rain is also causing massive damage in many parts of the country.
