5 Pro-Morsi Supporters Sentenced to Death in Egypt Court

KABUL: (Middle East Press) At least five people have been sentenced to death by a court in Egypt who were the supporters of the ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, in connection with the alleged killing of more than a dozen police officers during a deadly security crackdown near the capital, Cairo.

The perpetrators were condemned to death in the Giza Criminal Court, Monday on charges of storming a police station in the town of Kerdasa, in the west of Cairo, on August 14, 2013, killing 13 policemen, bidding to kill ten others, burning police vehicles and possessing heavy weaponry.

The 2013 attack on the Kerdasa police station came on the same day as Egyptian security forces violently dispersed two major sit-ins staged by Morsi supporters in Cairo: one at al-Nahda Square and a larger one at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square.

According to the Egyptian Health Ministry, 638 people were killed, including 595 civilians and 43 police officers. Nearly 4,000 people were also injured.
