41 Missing After Landslide In China’s Fujian

eca86bd9e2f9189a0e4301MEP: At least 41 construction workers are missing in a landslide in China’s southeastern Fujian province, state media report.

Initially as many as 34 people were reported missing after a landslide triggered by pouring rains reached a hydroelectric power station that is currently under construction. Seven people were injured in the incident.

According to Xinhua news agency, the incident occurred early Sunday.

Nearly 20 cm (8 inches) of rain fell in the mountainous region in less than 24 hours, the agency said, adding that the earth was dislodged as a result.

In December, a landslide in the southern city of Shenzhen buried 77 people. The government has blamed breaches of construction safety rules for that disaster and a number of officials have been arrested.

Officials said on Sunday evening that more than 600 rescuers were at the scene, using sniffer dogs, specialist equipment and heavy excavator vehicles.
