25 Percent Increase In Country’s Electricity Rates

09-09-0439KABUL: (MEP) Afghanistan’s national power utility or (the Breshna Company) announced Sunday that due to rise of dollar against Afghan money, 25 percent has increased in the country’s electricity rate.

According to reports, Afghanistan is currently importing seventy percent of its electricity from its four neighboring countries.

Wahidullah Tawhidi, a spokesman for Breshna Company, said that they made a loss of up to $18 million in recent months due to rise in the rate of dollar.

“We purchase electricity from Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and sell in Afghanis” Tawhidi added.

However, he said that new decisions will be taken if there is change in dollar.

According to Tawhidi, the armed opposition last winter destroyed an electricity base in Baghlan province in which the company has reached two and a half million dollars in losses for restoring it.

The annual value of the imported electricity is estimated to be between $220 and $270 million.
