The report said the crash involving a car, a mini-bus and a truck occurred Sunday evening on the road linking Tehran to the city of Qom, located 135 kilometers (85 miles) to the south.

Mohammad Hussain, chief officer of the country’s road police said that the victims were illegal refugees who had crossed the border into Iran illegally.

Poverty, lack of job opportunities and the rise of insecurity thousands of Afghans leave the country every month.

Most of them go through Iran to reach out to Europe in an effort to have a good life.
