The incident occurred after coal gas flooded a colliery in the northeastern province of Jilin on Sunday, the Xinhua news service reported on Monday.
Rescuers brought one injured person to a hospital and confirmed on Monday morning that the other 12 trapped miners were dead.
The cause of the accident in under investigation. Carbon monoxide is typically the main component of noxious gases that leak from coal deposits, and they must be dispersed before they poison miners or explode.
This is not the first time that such an accident claims the lives of coal miners in China – the world’s largest producer of coal.
