BlastKABUL: (MEP) Two separate car bomb explosions, in the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad have killed at least 12 people and injured 39 others on Saturday.

The blasts occurred after a suicide attacker detonated his explosives targeting a security checkpoint in the northern part of the city killing nine people. Another bomber attacked an army convoy on Baghdad’s southern outskirts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for both attacks, however such attacks are often blamed on Islamic State (IS or Daesh) terrorist group.

According to local sources, the death toll may increase.

The Iraqi government has retaken several major cities from Islamic State in the past year and slowly pushed the militants back towards the Syrian border. Security has gradually improved in Baghdad, but bomb attacks against the security forces and Shi’ite residential or commercial areas are still a regular occurrence.
